Polyethylene (PE, [– CH2 – CH2 – ]n ) is obtained by polymerization of ethylene gas and is a thermoplastic plastic belonging to the polyolefin group.

Characteristics

  • Low gas and water vapor permeability, but allows oxygen, carbon dioxide, and aromatic substances to pass through easily.
  • High toughness and elongation at break, good sliding properties.
  • Temperature resistance from -85°C to +90°C.
  • Electrical/dielectric behavior (specific volume resistance approx. 1018 ohms/cm).
  • Resistant to solvents, acids, alkalis, water, alcohols, oil
  • Odorless and tasteless
  • Easy to process, very good weldability
  • In February 2005, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment expressed no concerns about the use of PE in the food sector and in the manufacture of consumer goods.
